GenieMat® FF is a robust dimpled rubber pad made from 92% recycled rubber content. It is used when superior floor sound insulation is required in mechanical rooms, sound studios, home theaters, entertainment venues, medical facilities, exercise, gym and dance floors, as well as commercial, industrial, and multifamily housing. Other features include bacteria, fungi, and water resistance along with LEED® point qualifications.

GenieMat® FF is made using compressible elastomer technology. Compressible elastomers are a different technology than vulcanized rubber. The typical vulcanized natural or neoprene rubber is defined as incompressible. It requires a high load (mass) in order to obtain some deflection, and consequently increased vibration isolation. For buildings where load is not available or desirable, these systems simply do not perform well. Compressible elastomer technology allows for low natural frequency at low loads. Due to the low load requirements, the rubber floating floor can cover the entire surface to provide consistent performance. Vulcanized floating floor sound isolation systems require the isolator to be carefully located, and extra isolators may need to be used depending on weight and position of equipment. This requires additional layout and installation work, as well as expenses.

Using GenieMat® FF, contractors simply need to roll-out the underlayment. The roll-out nature of the rubber, combined with the consistent performance, means concrete can be poured directly on it. GenieMat® FF is supplied with moisture barrier and there is no need for plywood form work. Another major benefit of GenieMat® FF over popular point isolation methods is the lack of fiberglass which can produce mold. The simplicity of a GenieMat® FF assembly requires no additional engineering approval and can easily be installed by inexperienced contractors. This product will not break down or move under load and is strong enough for trades to work on before overlaying with concrete or plywood.

CONCRETE SUB-FLOOR

Rubber underlayment will always perform best over or under concrete, either full pour or lightweight. Because of the extreme mass and rigidity of the concrete, the rubber sound insulation can compress properly allowing the rubber to add significant resilience to an otherwise rigid structure.

WOOD SUB-FLOOR

GenieMat® FF will not perform over wood sub-floors as predictably as it will over concrete. There are two great ways to mimic the performance of rubber over concrete in a wood structure. The best way is to fix the structural deflection between the joists (read Fixing Structural Deflection). The other way is by layering approximately 7 pounds per square foot of material over the sub-floor or over the GenieMat® FF. Layering directly to the sub-floor will help more with low frequency airborne and footfall impact noise transfer while layering over the GenieMat® FF will increase the STC rating by at least a couple points with a slight reduction in low frequency performance. Any heavy material will work for layering, e.g. plywood, OSB, MDF, drywall, 3/4" lightweight concrete, or a cementitious board like HardiBacker. Layering several pounds per square foot of material over the GenieMat FF is not required, but recommended in order to maximize the performance of the underlaid rubber floor sound insulation in a wood structure.

Layering also provides an opportunity to add more damping to the floor with a product like our Green Glue Compound. Including Green Glue Compound will add to the isolation of both impact footfall and airborne noise. Decoupling the ceiling below with GenieClips or resilient channel increases the value of the GenieMat® FF in both concrete and wood structures. The highest rated rubber floating floor/ceiling assemblies will have resilience in both the floor and the ceiling.

Read our article Maximizing Rubber Underlayment Performance for more detailed information.

If the joists below can be stiffened using stepped blocking, then layering can be avoided. Read our article Fixing Structural Deflection for more detailed information.

GenieMat® FF is only available in one size of roll per thickness. Partial or larger rolls cannot be purchased. Overestimating by 5% provides enough material for most projects. We suggest drawing the room dimensions and planning the installation layout to determine the appropriate number of rolls for the project.

GenieMat FF® can be cut with a standard razor knife. The rubber can have an odor to it when it first arrives. This smell typically fades away similarly to a newly painted room. If the smell lingers or the user is sensitive to the smell of rubber, cover the rubber with a 4-mil plastic sheeting.

INSTALLATION FOR FLOATING FINISHED FLOOR

Follow these steps if installing a floating floor made of either hardwood, laminate, or carpet over GenieMat® FF.

  1. Install GenieMat® PMI on the perimeter of the room to start the installation.
  2. Cut the GenieMat® FF to fit tight against the GenieMat® PMI.
  3. Butt the seams together, avoid overlapping.
  4. Cover seams with standard duct tape. Fill in gaps with acoustical sealant before taping.
  5. Install flooring directly to the GenieMat® FF or to the additional layering over the GenieMat® FF if applicable.

INSTALLATION FOR FIXED FINISHED FLOOR

When using grouted or fully adhered flooring materials, a monolitic substrate must be included between the GenieMat® FF and the finished floor.

  1. Install GenieMat® PMI on the perimeter of the room to start the installation.
  2. Cut the GenieMat® FF to fit tight against the GenieMat® PMI.
  3. Continue with the next row, butt the seams together, avoid overlapping. Complete each row before moving to the next.
  4. Cover seams with standard duct tape. Fill gaps with acoustical sealant before taping.
  5. Adhere a double layer of 1/4" Hardibacker cross-plied (preferred material since it does not warp) or double layer of 1/2" plywood (glued and screwed for stability) to the top of the GenieMat® FF.
  6. Install the finished floor as recommended by the flooring manufacturer.
