The SSP SpecSeal Putty Pad is a high-performance solution for sealing through penetrations, electrical boxes, and construction gaps. Each pad measures 7¼ inches square and 3/16 inch thick, nearly twice the thickness of most standard putty pads. This added mass enhances both sound isolation and fire resistance, making it ideal for achieving high STC and UL fire ratings. Manufactured by Specified Technologies (STI) under model SpecSeal SSP4S, this product is tested for sound and fire performance to maintain the integrity of rated wall assemblies.
Electrical Outlets
The most common use for the SSP SpecSeal Putty Pad is behind electrical outlets. Electrical boxes create openings that reduce wall mass, allowing sound and air transfer. Applying acoustic putty pads restores the barrier, improving both soundproofing and fire safety. Putty pads are recommended when a wall has more than two single-gang outlets per 100 square feet of surface area or when superior STC performance is required.
Doors and Windows
Use the SSP Putty Pad to fill gaps between door jambs and framing or window frames and walls. Unlike foam gaskets, which compress and lose sealing ability, putty materials provide continuous density and remain stable over time. Acoustic testing labs rely on putty-based materials to achieve high STC ratings and eliminate flanking paths.
General Openings
The SpecSeal Putty Pad can also be used to seal any gap or hole larger than ½ inch when targeting STC ratings above 50. Tear or shape the pad as needed, or roll it to fill longer gaps and seams. With superior adhesion, flexibility, and fire resistance, the SSP SpecSeal Putty Pad is the industry-standard choice for soundproofing and fire-rated assemblies in both commercial and residential construction.
Installation
The SSP SpecSeal Putty Pad installs quickly with a simple peel-and-stick application. Each pad comes with protective release paper on both sides—remove the paper before use. The flexible, moldable putty is easy to tear, shape, and piece together, allowing for a precise fit in any opening or gap.
Electrical Outlet Installation
- Remove one side of the release paper.
- Center the pad over the back of the installed electrical outlet box.
- Wrap the sides of the box completely to form an airtight, continuous seal.
The self-adhering acoustic putty bonds securely to plastic or metal electrical boxes without extra fasteners or adhesives. Once installed, the material remains soft and pliable, maintaining long-term sound isolation and fire resistance.
Door and Window Installation
For larger or irregular gaps, fold the putty pad into thicker sections to fill the space completely. For narrow seams, roll the putty into rope form and press it firmly between the frame and wall to create a continuous, flexible seal. The SSP SpecSeal Putty Pad ensures a reliable fire-rated and acoustically sealed barrier, ideal for achieving high STC performance in both commercial and residential walls.

Estimating
SSP SpecSeal Putty Pads are sold in packs of five and twenty for convenient use on multiple outlets or openings. Putty pads are typically required when a wall includes more than two single-gang outlets per 100 square feet of surface area to maintain STC and fire ratings. Each pad provides enough material to seal one single-gang electrical outlet box completely.
- 1 pad covers one single-gang outlet
- 2 pads cover a double- or triple-gang outlet
- 3 pads cover a quadruple-gang outlet box
For door frame applications, approximately five pads are recommended to properly fill and seal the perimeter gaps around a standard-size door.
The SSP SpecSeal Putty Pad ensures a continuous, code-compliant barrier for soundproofing and fire resistance across all wall assemblies.
