Product Use

Our Pipe and Duct Wrap is a versatile vibration damping pad that is highly efficient at damping lightweight hard surface materials. We have designed this product to dampen the vibrations transferring through any metal surface up to .14" surface thickness (10 gauge) or any plastic surface up to .39" thickness (includes drain pipe, Schedule 40, and Schedule 80). It is most commonly used to wrap plastic drain pipes and sheet metal ductwork, but can adhere to any smooth lightweight surface to reduce, and often eliminate, sound transfer through the material. Other applications include vehicle interiors, machinery, furnaces, and appliances.

The black side of each isolation sheet is a self stick butyl that will easily attach to pipes, duct, and other clean smooth surfaces without additional fasteners. The opposite side of the vibration dampening pad is a reflective aluminum constrained layer with a finish similar to sheet metal. The weight of our Pipe and Duct Wrap is similar to 1 LB MLV with the damping power of Green Glue Compound. It's a great, high efficiency damping pad that will far exceed the performance of simple MLV alone.

Installation

Keep in mind that Pipe Wrap can only dampen if it is making full contact with the surface it is adhered to. It does not function like a typical acoustic barrier that does not require contact to block sound transfer. This is a permanent solution that can be removed with significant effort of cutting the Pipe Wrap and using a putty knife to scrape away at the black butyl to remove it from the pipe or duct.

Pipe Wrap Installation

  • Our Pipe Wrap is very sticky and should be considered a permanent solution. We recommend cutting to fit with the release paper still attached and test the fit before applying to the pipe. It should fully wrap around the drain pipe, or exhaust pipe, with the seams tight or slightly overlapping.
  • Remove the brown release paper from the back of the sheet.
  • Line the entire length of the sheet along the pipe and apply slowly to ensure there are no wrinkles or air bubbles.
  • Work your way around the pipe until you have wrapped the pipe entirely. Any elbows, corners, or other fittings should be wrapped separately with smaller cut pieces to ensure the Pipe Wrap remains tight to the surface.

Duct Wrap Installation

Installation to sheet metal duct is similar to installation to pipes, but in larger surface areas.

  • Cut to size with the release paper still attached before attempting to apply the Duct Wrap.
  • Apply it slowly to the duct while ensuring there are no wrinkles or air bubbles. All seams should be tight or slightly overlapping.
  • The Duct Wrap is self adhering and incredibly sticky. Work slowly to avoid any mistakes, as removal and reapplication is not possible.

Pipe wrap can be used on any plastic or metal surface up to 1/8" in thickness. Doubling up the wrap will triple the damping performance of the wrap.

Estimating

Each sheet is sized at 19.5” x 31.5" covering a total of 4.25 square feet per sheet.

For drain pipe coverage, estimate 38 linear inches per sheet for 4 inch drain pipes and 62 linear inches for 3 inch drain pipes. Calculate the circumference of the drain pipe or round duct by multiplying the diameter by 3.14.

For large surface areas, like duct work, we recommend simply calculating the square square feet of each surface and dividing by the 4.25 square foot coverage of each sheet. The only waste involved with Pipe Wrap or Duct Wrap installation is in the overlapping of seams. Small scrap pieces remaining from cuts can be used to fill in uncovered spaces.

Performance

This Pipe and Duct Wrap is similar to mass loaded vinyl in weight, but with damping properties several times greater than both 1 LB and 2 LB MLV. While a single layer provides significant damping, a double layer of wrap has been tested to show triple the damping. On a scale of 0 to 1, the damping rating of sheet metal is around .006. With this wrap installed against the sheet metal, the damping increases to .441. This is a gain of 7500%, similar to what Green Glue Compound accomplishes in a wall.

There is not a proper lab test for the STC performance of such a product, so we have to base real world application performance off feedback from customers. Based on this feedback from several customers, a single layer of our wrap around a drain pipe is at least equal to the performance of sound control achieved with cast iron drain pipes (almost nearly isolated from all resonance). A double layer of this wrap around a drain pipe should achieve full isolation.
