Door Width and Height

Our standard door price is based on a 36" door width for a 38" rough opening. An option to change the width to 28", 30", 32", 34", or 42" is available. Other custom widths are available. You can select custom width and include the stated door width size in the order notes.

Our standard door price is based on an 80" door height for an 82" rough opening. An option to change the height to 84" or 96" is available. Other custom heights are available. You can select custom height and include the stated door height size in the order notes.

Jamb Width

To determine the correct jamb width, measure or calculate the total wall depth from the outer face of one finished layer to the outer face of the opposite side. Be sure to include all layers of drywall, isolation materials, and finishes in your measurement. Our standard IsoDoor pricing includes extra-wide jambs up to 8 inch depth.

For walls requiring jambs wider than 8 inches, a surcharge will occur after your order is placed. For jambs between 8" and 12", $125. For jambs between 12" and 16", $175.

For best results on extra-deep walls, we recommend building a jamb extension on site using 3/4" beech, MDF, or similar. Jambs wider than 6" are shipped knocked down in the crate to prevent damage during transit.

If your design includes a communicating assembly, then you must order two separate doors. To determine the jamb depth for each door, measure the total wall cavity depth where both doors will be installed. Then subtract 1/2" from that measurement and divide the remaining depth by 2. This creates a 1/2" air gap between the two jambs, helping to equalize air pressure and improve acoustic performance when both doors are closed.

Door Swing

Door swing direction is determined from the outside of the room, before entering. While facing the door:

  • If the hinges are on the left, it’s a Left-Hand (LH) door.
  • If the hinges are on the right, it’s a Right-Hand (RH) door.
  • If the door swings into the room, it’s an In-Swing (I).
  • If the door swings toward you, it’s an Out-Swing (O).

Combine these to define your door swing, for example, LHI (Left-Hand In-Swing) or RHO (Right-Hand Out-Swing).

Panel Designs

IsoStore offers panel designs that can be applied to one side or both sides of the door. When a panel design is selected for only one side, it is applied by default to the exterior side of the door, which is determined by the swing direction chosen during ordering, unless otherwise specified. A single-sided panel does not increase the overall door thickness and is available exclusively in a paint-grade finish.

For customers who prefer panels on both sides, a double-sided panel design increases the door thickness by approximately 1/4". For example, the IsoDoor SD becomes 2" thick when panels are applied to both sides. All IsoDoor panels feature the clean, timeless shaker style design shown in the photos below. At this time, more decorative panel options are not offered. If desired, trim can be surface mounted to the face of the door on site for a more customized appearance.

Larger images of our panel designs can be viewed in the product thumbnail photos at the top of this page.

Glass Kits

Our acoustically rated glass kits are designed to match or exceed the sound isolation performance of the IsoDoor models in which they are installed. Each glass kit features a double laminated and tempered insulated glass unit (IGU) engineered for superior noise control and long-term durability.

For IsoDoor SD models, the glass kit measures 1-1/4" overall thickness and includes two laminated glass panes of differing thicknesses, each incorporating a Saflex acoustic interlayer to reduce vibration and sound transmission across a broad frequency range. These IGUs are fully sealed units, meaning you’ll never need to disassemble them for cleaning or maintenance. For a closer look, larger images of our glass kits can be viewed in the product thumbnail photos at the top of this page.

We offer smart dead bolts that can operate with connections to Apple and Android devices though native apps with Bluetooth and WiFi connections. Lots of ways to unlock your dead bolt, including key code, key card, fingerprint, and a standard key. Sized to fit our IsoDoor SD.

Installation

Installing an IsoDoor sound isolation door requires at least two people due to the weight and precision of the unit. The installation process is similar to that of a standard door, but it demands greater attention to detail to ensure optimal acoustic performance.

For best results, installers must carefully adjust the rubber perimeter seals and the automatic door bottom to achieve the full STC rating verified during laboratory testing. Each IsoDoor SD ships with a complete installation guide and receiving instructions, providing step-by-step directions to help ensure proper setup and maximum sound isolation.

View our install animation below for a simple visual on a standard IsoDoor installation.

We recommend installing our IsoDoors as interior doors only. If your project requires exterior installation, the door must be sealed with a high-quality spar urethane and finished using a premium exterior-grade paint or stain sealer on all six sides to ensure long-term durability and moisture protection.

Door Seal Design

Our acoustic door seals are engineered to create dead air space and multiple layers of redundancy, making installation easier while allowing for minor variations in alignment. This thoughtful design ensures that lab tested STC performance can be reliably replicated in real world installations. In contrast, many other isolation doors use oversized, bulky seals that may seem simple to install but often develop corner leaks and require frequent adjustments over time. IsoDoor’s precision seal system maintains consistent performance without compromising appearance or durability.

Door Handles

We strongly recommend solid stainless steel handles to withstand the weight and seal pressure of our heavy-duty sound isolation doors. For best results, we suggest INOX brand hardware, specifically the TL4 Series Tubular Lock, which provides premium strength and smooth operation for IsoDoor HD, SD, and V models. These handles are crafted entirely from stainless steel, inside and out, for exceptional reliability in demanding installations. More handle options than shown on this product page are available on our partner site: isohardware.com/products/tl4-series-tubular-lock.

Sound Tests

The IsoDoor SD sound isolation door was independently tested as a fully operable door assembly at one of the most accurate acoustics laboratories in the United States, following the latest ASTM sound testing standards. The complete lab test results for the IsoDoor SD can be found in the Product Specs download on this page. In addition to individual door testing, we’ve conducted independent acoustic tests on communicating door assemblies, pairing the IsoDoor SD with our IsoDoor HD and IsoDoor V models. Some of these test results are published below, while others are available upon request.

Comparing Performance

It’s important to note that STC ratings can vary significantly depending on the testing lab, the testing year, and the specific procedures used. Many competitor results still reference data from the 1960s through the 1990s, often obtained from in-house testing facilities that lacked the precision of today’s certified labs. Because of these inconsistencies, STC claims from other manufacturers cannot be accurately compared to IsoDoor results. Our IsoDoor line was tested in 2012 at a top-tier independent U.S. acoustics lab known for its precision and reliability.

While our published STC ratings may appear slightly lower than inflated legacy numbers from competitors, our results are verifiable, repeatable, and field-proven. In real world installations, IsoDoor performance consistently meets or exceeds competing sound isolation doors. For a more meaningful comparison between manufacturers, evaluate door weight per square foot and overall door thickness rather than relying solely on STC ratings.

  • IsoDoor SD weighs approximately 11.5 lbs per square foot
  • Overall 1-3/4" thick
  • Exhibits no resonance issues across the tested STC contour range
  • Use a multi component perimeter seal to create dead air space and redundancy between seal sets

These factors provide a more accurate and honest basis for performance comparison.

Communicating Door Assemblies

For maximum sound isolation, we recommend creating a communicating door assembly, installing two sound isolation doors on each side of the wall with an airspace between them. Our lab tests show STC/OITC ratings up to 55/50 when using an IsoDoor SD in combination with another IsoDoor model, such as the IsoDoor HD or the IsoDoor HD LF. Pairing different door types helps eliminate resonance overlap, which can occur when two identical materials are used in the same assembly. This dual-door configuration can match or exceed the performance of high-STC double-stud wall systems.

All testing was conducted by third-party accredited laboratories, ensuring accuracy and credibility. Full test reports are available upon request.
