Product Use

Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound is one of the most effective and affordable damping materials for reducing sound transmission in walls, ceilings, and floors. This advanced soundproofing compound is applied between two layers of drywall, plywood, or other solid non-porous materials to absorb vibrations and stop noise from traveling through structures.

Ideal for use in walls, ceilings, floors, isolation boxes, window plugs, and doors, Green Glue is a trusted choice for homeowners, contractors, and recording studios looking to improve sound isolation performance.

Why Choose Green Glue in Tubes?

Green Glue Compound is available in convenient 28-ounce tubes for easy application and accurate coverage tracking. This packaging is ideal for small projects, phased installations, or anyone who prefers simplified dispensing over bulk pails. Each tube covers approximately 16 square feet at the recommended application rate. The tube format costs slightly more (about $0.35 per sq. ft.) than using the five gallon pails, but offers better control and less waste.

Walls

Green Glue Compound can be applied to most wall types, including wood framing, steel stud framing, staggered stud walls, double stud walls, and assemblies using resilient clips or resilient channel.

  • Performs best in walls framed 24" on center, where surfaces are more flexible.
  • Walls framed 16" on center are less responsive to Green Glue Compound, but still improves performance noticeably.
  • Walls that are concrete/cinder block/plaster are too rigid or dense to benefit from damping.
  • Adding Green Glue to a standard 24" OC wall can significantly improve sound isolation, effectively blocking loud voices, TV noise, and ringing phones.

Ceilings

Ceilings typically transmit more noise due to weight and rigidity. When used between two layers of drywall, Green Glue Compound provides moderate improvement. For maximum results, combine Green Glue with a resilient clip system or resilient channel. This combination can increase isolation by about 7 IIC (impact noise) and 6 STC (airborne noise) points, a noticeable improvement in both footfall and airborne sound control.

Floors

For floor assemblies, similar to ceilings, Green Glue Compound performs best in conjunction with resilient systems.

  • When used under ceilings suspended from resilient sound clips or channels, expect 7 IIC and 6 STC improvement.
  • Also effective beneath rubber underlayments or layered between plywood and GenieMat RST for additional impact noise reduction.
  • Pair with Green Glue Sealant to close gaps and further improve isolation.

Important Installation Notes

Do not apply Green Glue directly onto studs or joists, it must be sandwiched between solid layers to be effective. Always follow manufacturer coverage and curing guidelines for best results.

Why Damping Matters

Traditional STC ratings only measure direct sound transmission, not the flanking vibrations that travel through walls and floors. Structures with low damping allow noise to spread easily. By increasing internal damping, Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound dissipates vibrations quickly, preventing sound from traveling through adjoining materials. This makes it a vital component in both decoupled and high STC assemblies, delivering real world noise reduction beyond lab-tested ratings.

Green Glue Compound is a highly effective damping material that’s extremely sticky, yet not an adhesive. You’ll still need to use screws to secure your drywall or wood layers properly.

  • Apply the compound: Use a standard quart-sized caulking gun to apply Green Glue from the 28-ounce tubes directly onto the back of the new drywall sheet.
  • Spread pattern: The exact pattern of application isn’t critical, random or consistent lines and curves work fine, but maintaining an even distribution is important for optimal performance.
  • Recommended coverage: Use two tubes per 32 sq. ft. drywall panel, or one tube per 16 sq. ft. of surface area.
  • Install the panel: Once the compound is applied, press the new layer of drywall against the existing wall, then fasten it securely with screws through the drywall into the framing. Screw spacing should be around 8" to 10" between each screw.

Tip: Green Glue remains workable for about 15 minutes after application, so be sure to fasten the panel shortly after applying the compound for the best performance.

Sound Tests

Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound delivers industry leading performance, meeting or exceeding the effectiveness of other damping compounds on the market, and outperforming nearly all pre-damped drywall products. Green Glue Compound has been tested for STC, OITC, IIC, and is UL fire rated in multiple assemblies.
