Green Glue Noiseproofing Sealant is a high-performance acoustical caulk designed to seal gaps, holes, and openings in walls, ceilings, and floors, as well as around windows, doors, outlets, and wiring. Proper sealing is essential for achieving the full soundproofing performance of any wall or ceiling assembly. Even the best isolation materials will underperform if the partition is not completely sealed.
Unlike lightweight alternatives such as spray foam or gasket material, Green Glue Sealant has the mass and density required to block sound effectively. For gaps larger than ½ inch, use SpecSeal SSP Putty Pads to fill the space, then apply Green Glue Acoustical Sealant for a complete, airtight finish.
This water-based, zero-VOC acoustical sealant is both UL-rated and tested for high-STC sound isolation assemblies. Once cured, it remains flexible and dense, forming a long-lasting acoustic barrier between adjoining surfaces. Green Glue Noiseproofing Sealant is one of the most cost-effective soundproofing solutions available, delivering premium results at a price comparable to standard latex caulk.
Installation
Green Glue Noiseproofing Sealant comes in a quart-size (28 oz) cartridge and fits any large caulking gun, available from IsoStore or most hardware stores. Application is similar to standard caulking but requires complete coverage for best soundproofing results.
- Fill gaps completely, not just at the surface, to create an airtight acoustic seal.
- Smooth the sealant so it is level or slightly recessed from the drywall surface.
- Allow at least two hours to dry before applying drywall tape or joint compound.
- Once cured, Green Glue Sealant is paintable, making it suitable for both finished and unfinished surfaces.
Following these steps ensures maximum sound isolation and a clean, professional finish for your soundproofing installation.
Sound Tests
Acoustical sealant cannot be tested as a standalone product. Instead, performance is measured by comparing a sealed wall assembly to an unsealed wall assembly. The STC rating (Sound Transmission Class) reflects the overall performance of the sealed assembly, not just the sealant itself. This can lead to confusion, some sealants may appear more or less effective depending on how the test is presented. The most accurate way to evaluate acoustical sealant is by comparing how much sound isolation improves when a wall is properly sealed versus when it is not.
In testing, a well-sealed wall performs as designed, achieving full soundproofing potential. An unsealed wall, even one treated with Green Glue Compound, performs only slightly better than a standard wall. The missing sealant creates flanking paths that allow sound to bypass the insulation and drywall, negating the benefits of soundproofing materials. Properly applying Green Glue Noiseproofing Sealant can prevent up to a 20-point STC loss, ensuring your wall assembly performs to its full potential. Failing to seal joints, outlets, and perimeter gaps can erase nearly all the gains achieved through other soundproofing upgrades.

Estimating
Each Green Glue Noiseproofing Sealant tube contains 28 ounces of acoustical caulk, three times more than a standard caulking tube. For best performance, gaps in sound isolation assemblies should be no wider than 1/4". As a general guideline, plan for one tube per 100 square feet of surface area. Actual coverage may vary depending on the number and size of gaps in your walls, ceilings, or floors.
Because Green Glue Sealant is paintable, any leftover material can be used for finish work, such as sealing trim, doors, or windows. This makes it a cost-effective, multipurpose sealant for both soundproofing and general construction.
